Photographing the Moods of the Peace River Valley

Updated: Jan 9, 2020

The massive landscape that the river valley presents attracts many photographers. Here are some factors to keep in mind in your quest for engaging photos!

1) Lighting: Every photographer knows that light effects make or break a photo. In outdoor landscapes the most reliable times for cool light effects are at dawn and dusk. In the long summer days of the north, that can mean 4:30 am or 10:30 pm! Other great light effects can occur on cloudy or stormy days.

2) Seasons: Every season has distinct features that can be intriguing when you start looking for them. Don't forget winter! Be creative with the color palettes that nature offers.

3) Fog and Clouds: The Peace Valley has a lot of foggy mornings. While some might consider that a detriment to photography, in fact the patient photographer can capture some amazing effects as fog lifts and shifts.

4) Wildlife : The valley abounds with amazing birds, wildlife and plants, but true great shots only come from immersing yourself in the wild rhythms. Get to know what each season offers for species of plants and birds, and where they are likely to be found. Wildlife are even more unpredictable, but sightings are most likely, (like light effects) at dawn and dusk when animals like to come down to the river to drink. Very hot days also will attract them to swim in the river. Obviously civilization is a deterrent, so seek out the many wild places on the river. The best way to do this is get on the water, away from the human corridors, to up your odds of wildlife sightings!
